When people think about health and fitness, they never consider how important self-care is. After-all they are going on this journey for themselves. To reach some sort of goal.
Whether it be to lose weight, be more fit, or improve their health. The big thing people forget, is to practice self-care while they reach for their goals.
In order to practice self-care, you first need to understand what it is.
What is Self-Care
Self-care is engaging in activities that makes us mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy.
This is done by doing what you enjoy rather than just what you feel you must do. For example, you might enjoy reading.
Think about a time that you read something because you wanted to and a time you had to read something even though you didn’t want to.
Think about how you felt.
Reading it because you wanted to is self-care.
Activities that rejuvenate you can be different for every person and can be pretty much anything you can think of.
If it’s what you love, it’s self-care.
Why is it Important
Self-care is important for many different reasons. When you take care of yourself, you can take better care of others.
Think about your daily routine for a minute. You go to work, get home after a long day, have to make dinner, maybe help your kids with homework, get them ready for bed, do some cleaning, and do it all over again the next day.
We have all been there. It’s overwhelming and life gets exhausting!
If you keep taking on everything, you become burnt out. It affects you physically, mentally, and emotionally.
So, it is important to take time for you. It might sound selfish and you know what, it is! That’s ok. To be the best you, its necessary!
How to Practice it
There are countless ways to practice self-care. Again, this can be whatever activity makes you happy and recharges you.
The important thing is to find what works best for you. You also have to consciously make the decision to practice self-care.
It is not something that will just happen on its own.
Do what you know works from you. You can slowly branch out and find more and more ways to practice self-care that work for you.
Set aside time for you. If you need to schedule it in a calendar, do it. If you have to have someone keep you accountable, find that someone. No matter what, make the time and stick with it.
In order for an activity to work for you, you must realize consciously that it is a self-care activity. If you see it as rejuvenating, it will recharge you.
Examples of Self-Care
