The Ketogenic Diet has become a very popular diet that many people trying to lose weight have turned to. I recently did a post on 100 calorie snacks, but with so many people on the keto diet, I would be remiss if I didn’t also do a post for zero or low carbohydrate snacks as well.
When we are working on ourselves, whether it be losing weight or just being healthier, it can be difficult to stick with if you don’t have help.
It is much easier to do if you have a place to turn that will give you some guidance, rather than having to do all the research yourself.
Here, you can find a great list of ideas for zero or low carbohydrate snacks, so you don’t have to go searching all over the internet and can get back to your life.
Define Ketogenic Diet
If you do not know what the keto diet is, it is a low carbohydrate, high protein and fat diet. When you eat low carbs, your body goes into a state called ketosis.
In ketosis, your body starts to burn your fat because it no longer has those carbs to burn. If you want to learn more about the keto diet, see my post, Beginners Guide to the Ketogenic Diet.
With that being said, you can see why low carbohydrate snacks are a must.
If you have not read my post, Helpful 100 Calorie Snacks You Will Love, then you probably don’t realize the benefits there are to have a snack. Here I will briefly mention then, but if you want to learn more, I suggest checking out my 100-calorie snack post.
Snacking can help you to increase your energy, put you in a better mood, improve your focus, and control your weight.
Healthy snacking can also lead you to eating healthier meals.
And when your physical health improves from having healthy foods, your mental health improves as well.
Zero And Low Carbohydrate Snacks
These are a variety of ideas that you will want to keep on hand, so you can better plan your snacking. This list includes both snacks you can buy and ones you can make.
I would suggest trying a mix so you can find what you like best and it will help keep you from getting bored with your snacks.
Alright, let’s get to the list of ideas.
Mighty Cheese Crunch
You can buy these on Amazon. They come in four different flavors. Depending on the flavor, these are great zero or low carbohydrate snacks.
Cheddar Egg White and Bacon, which contains 0g of carbs.
Cheddar Egg White, also has 0g of carbs.
Parmesan Cheddar Egg White, has 1g of carbs.
And Parmesan Cheddar Egg White with Everything Spices, contains 2g of carbs.
String cheese is a great snack to have on hand. You can get it at any store in a good-sized pack and they stay good for quite a while.
Depending on the type of string cheese, you will see that the amount of carbs can vary a little bit. If you choose a part skim Mozzarella string cheese, it has only about 1.1 grams of carbs.
This is another snack that will stay fresh for a while and can add some variety to your snacking.
In a 1oz serving, which is about 20 cashews, there are 8g of carbs.
If you have never had pork rinds before, I suggest giving them a shot. Everyone I know that is on keto, loves them as a snack and use them as a no carb breading on things like chicken.
If you get the original pork rinds that don’t have added flavors, there are 0g of carbs in them.
Others with flavors have about 1g of carbs in them.
If you are looking for a really different snack on the sweet side, I would opt for these protein crisps.
They come in two different flavors.
Cookies and Cream, which has 3g of carbs per bag.
And Strawberries and Cream, that has 4g of carbs in a bag.
Or you can go with two different salty flavors.
Baked Cheddar with 2g of carbs.
And last but not least Brickoven Pizza also with 2g of carbs per bag.
Hard Boiled Eggs
I think these are a great snack. They have substance so you feel satisfied after having it. And the even better part is that in 1 egg there are only .6g of carbs.
Bacon makes everything better, so why not have it as a snack. 1 piece of bacon contains only .1g of carbs, so it is a snack you could easily have a few pieces of and still be consuming very low carbs.
Pork Sausage Patty
If you prefer sausage over bacon you are in luck. 1 original patty has 0g of carbs. Again, plenty filling as a snack.
Everyone should have vegetables in their diet. The good thing is that there are several veggies that have few carbs in them. In 1 cup of chopped broccoli, there are 6g of carbs.
Not everyone is a fan of broccoli, so why not have cucumber which also has less carbs. 1 cup of chopped cucumber only has 4g of carbs.
And the vegetable that most people know as having very low calories and carbs is celery. 1 medium stalk contains just 1.2g of carbs. This is also a great snack because it makes you feel full.
This is a good snack to have for a couple different reasons. You can eat it plain or you can pair it with other low carb snacks.
A lot of people love peanut butter on their celery. 2Tbs of peanut butter has 3.5g of carbs, so pairing it with something like celery is still a low carb snack!
Some people prefer almond butter or switch because it has almost 1g of carbs less that regular peanut butter.
2Tbs of almond butter contains 2.8g of carbs and again, it can be paired with multiple other snacks.
Pickles are another very low carbohydrate snack. 1 medium pickle contains .7g of carbs. I think this is a good snack to have on hand because it is a very different option to have.
You never want your options to get boring or feel like you have the same thing all the time. That’s what causes people to quit diets.
Another unique snack idea are olives. It’s a nice light, salty, options. 1oz or 10 small olives have just 1g of carbs.
I think this is a great snack idea. Not only does plain tuna have 0g of carbs, you can do more with tuna than just eat it plain. You can have it on cheese chips or make it into tuna salad for more snacking options, all low carb.
ChocZero Dark Chocolate
I am a person that like chocolate sometimes. I think there are a lot of us out there. The good news is, there are some good tasting low carb options so you can indulge in your craving. 1 piece of this dark chocolate has only 5g of carbs.
You can use any type of cheese that you prefer. You can also add extra to your cheese, such as bacon and green onion.
Form them into piles on sheet pan with parchment paper. Make sure they are not touching. Bake at 400 degrees until they are the desired crispiness.
Depending on the type of cheese you use, your carbs could be between 0g-2g.
The great thing about this snack is that it is a very different texture than a lot of the other snacks on this list. You can also use a number of other items from this list to use to scoop the guacamole, such as the cheese chips.
The amount of carbohydrates in this snack will also depend on what is in it.
In a ¼ cup of guacamole there is about 5g of carbs.
Guacamole with tomatoes and guacamole with tomatoes and chili peppers each have about 4.5g of carbs.
Cloud bread contains egg whites, cream cheese and salt. It is not as solid as bread, but it is a great low carb replacement that tastes good.
In 1 medium size piece, it contains about 1g of carbs.
Keep in Mind
Snacking is not a bad thing. Sometimes it is even necessary to keep you going and hold you over until mealtime.
It is always a good idea to keep a list of snack ideas on hand. It can be difficult to come up with different options on the fly.
Most people turn to what the usually have. But sometimes you want a variety and there is nothing wrong with that.
These snack ideas can give you the variety you want, with all of the carbohydrate information to make it even easier to ensure you are picking the best snacks for you.
