Why You Need a Fitbit: Improve Health & Fitness

Fitbit Models

If you have been wavering on getting a Fitbit, I am going to talk you into why you need a Fitbit and how it can help improve your health and fitness.

I bought my first Fitbit in 2015, keep in mind the first Fitbit released was in 2013. So, I can tell you that Fitbit has truly made strides over the years and continues to get better.

If you have been working on improving your health and fitness, or are looking to start, I highly recommend a Fitbit. It is truly worth the investment.

What is a Fitbit

Fitbit- What is a Fitbit

A Fitbit is an activity tracker. That seems simple, but that encompasses so much. Not only can it track your steps, heart rate, and exercises, but it can also track your sleep, food and water intake, put in a calorie deficit,  and track female health.

It helps provide great insight into many areas of your health and fitness to help you make positive changes.

You will see this as we get into all of the features Fitbit has to offer.

Types of Fitbits

There are a few different lines of Fitbit. As they advance, they create newer models on their lines. For example, I currently have a Charge 2. They are now up to a Charge 4.

The Fitbit Charge and Fitbit Inspire, they consider to be trackers. And the Fitbit Versa and Fitbit Ionic are categorized as smart watches.

All of these differ in their functions available, so it is important to really determine what you want, so you pick the right Fitbit for you.

A great thing about their website is that you can compare different options to see what each one offers side by side. This is a great way to decide which will work best for your needs.

I won’t go into all of their features because there are just too many to list. I want to show you what each on looks like, and if one sparks your interest, you can always check out its specific features.

In a minute I will get to the features you will typically see for these Fitbits as well.

Versa 3

The Versa 3 just came out in October and has the same great design as the Versa 2 with a slight change in the watchband. It does everything the Versa 2 does and some.

You can have music from Pandora or Deezer and this watch also offers a smart wake option. I have tried this and it is great. You set your alarm on your watch to wake you up in the morning and if you choose smart wake, there is a half hour window before your wakeup time that your Fitbit will wake you up within. The Fitbit wakes you during an optimal sleep stage to help you feel rested.

And this version charges faster so you can get moving quicker.

This watch also came out this October and is the one I upgraded to. This Fitbit got a lot a grief from a lot of people. They claim it tries to do too much. I on the other hand absolutely love it! Now, maybe that is because I upgraded from the Charge 2.

Some extra options this Fitbit has, that none of the others offer, is an EDA Scan. This is a scan to show you what your stress level is at that time. You can also log your mood at that time. This helps to show you your overall stress to help you manage it better. It takes 2 minutes to do it, so doing it during a stressful time is going to give you those 2 minutes to to pause and relax.

You also get a stress management score that can help you learn which areas you need to work on, such as stress.

You are can also get the ECG app that takes 30 seconds to tell you how your heart rhythm is. Obviously, if you feel something is wrong you should always consult your doctor, but it give you an idea.

The Sense has a skin temperature monitor that tracks your temperature each night and compares it to your baseline. This will show you trends overtime. And it tracks your breathing rate and heart rate variability to show you trends to help your overall wellness.

Why You Need A Fitbit

At this point you might still be wondering why you need a Fitbit.

Make sure to read through this next section and you are going to understand why.

Improve Your Health

If you are looking to improve your health, get on the right track, and stay there, then I can’t stress how much a Fitbit is going to help you.

There are so many ways that a Fitbit can help you improve your health.

Here is exactly how it can do that.

1. Tracks Your Heart Rate

Fitbit Heart Rate Tracker- Why You Need A Fitbit

Your heart rate it the number of times your heart beats per minute. It is also known as your pulse.

Knowing your heart rate can help you spot health problems that may be developing.

You can see your resting heart rate from day to day on the Fitbit app, so if you see a noticeable difference, such as a drastic decrease or increase in your heart rate. This can tell you if you may have a health condition that you should follow up on with your doctor.

Catching these things early means you can treat them before they cause even more problems.

2. Tracks Your Sleep

Fitbit Sleep Stages Graph- Why You Need A Fitbit

Sleep is vital to your health, both physically and mentally. It has a huge impact on your energy, mood, and weight.

Although sleep varies from person to person, generally you need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.

You should hit on average 3-5 REM cycles a night and  spend 20-25% of you time asleep in REM. Light sleep accounts for 50-60% of your time asleep and about 20-30% in deep sleep.

If you are someone that doesn’t feel like they sleep the best, then this is a great reason why you need a Fitbit.

I know I have trouble sleeping sometimes. I tend to go in spurts where I sleep fine, then hit a patch where I have a hard time sleeping. That is why I have actually started to wear my Fitbit to bed, so I can better track my sleep.

In the app, it tells you how much sleep you got and breaks down that time to how long you were in Light Sleep, Deep Sleep, REM, and Awake. It also gives a graph so you can see how your sleep fluctuates.

Knowing all of this data can help show you the type of sleep you are getting and if you need make changes.

3. Can Manually Track Food and Have a Calorie Deficit

Fitbit Calorie Deficit Plan Intensity Chart- Why You Need A Fitbit

If you are looking to lose weight or eat healthier, then this section is going to be why you need a Fitbit.

I feel like this is an underutilized function by a lot of the people I know that have a Fitbit. But it is an awesome feature. AND its super simple.

You can type in a food to search for it. There are a ton of different brands, which makes it easy to pretty accurate when logging your food.

What’s even better is if your food has a bar code, you can scan it and it brings up that item for you.

It can take a little bit of time to type in foods or find the best option, when you have something homemade.

But it is worth the little extra effort.

As you put the foods in, it tracks the amount of carbs, fats, and proteins you have eaten. This is a nice feature because you can see if you should be cutting down or adding somewhere. For example, it can show you if you aren’t getting enough protein.

Calorie Deficit

Along with tracking your food, you can also manually set a calorie deficit, or have Fitbit help you set it. A calorie deficit is meant to help you lose weight and it is an amount of calories you want to deduct from your calories each day.

For example, if you typically consume 2,000 calories a day and decide you want to do a 500 calorie deficit, you would consume 1,500 calories each day.

The great thing about this is that your Fitbit will automatically calculate that into the food section and it gives you a meter to show you if you are under calories, in the zone, or over calories. And this meter changes as you add food and with your activity level.

4. Can Manually Track Your Water Intake

Fitbit Water Tracker- Why You Need A Fitbit

Your body is made up of about 60% water, so it is easy to understand that drinking water is vital for your body.

It keeps you hydrated and helps balance bodily fluids. These bodily fluids help you with digestion, circulation, transportation of nutrients, absorption, and maintaining body temperature.

If you struggle drinking enough water each day, then logging it in the Fitbit app can help.

I have to admit, I drink pretty much just water all day, but I’m not always the best at tracking it. This is something I am still getting used to.

Typically when you log information, it is easier to make it a habit. And knowing how much water you are drinking can help you make sure you drink an appropriate amount.

Keep in mind, men should be consuming at least 101 ounces (just under 13 cups) and women should have at least 74 ounces (just over 9 cups) of water.

5. Guided Breathing Option

Fitbit Relax- Why You Need A Fitbit

Another neat option that Fitbit offers, which is another reason why you need a Fitbit, is their guided breathing called “Relax”.

This feature walks you through 2 minutes of guided breathing to help you relax.
This is great for times when you are feeling extra stressed out or you are trying to unwind before bed.

This is done right on the Fitbit itself.

And it is an option I feel a lot of people don’t understand how beneficial it can be.

Chronic stress can cause many health issues, so making it a point to relax your body can make a huge difference. It might also reduce some anxiety for you.

And if you are feeling a lot of stress, check out this post for more ways to reduce stress.

6. Female Health Tracker

Fitbit Women's Health Tracker- Why You Need A Fitbit

Women, this is why you need a Fitbit. The female health tracker, tracks your periods, symptoms, fertility window, and ovulation days.

You need to get in the habit of logging information in this section so that it can give you better predictions.

It gives you the ability to also look at your period trends and even get a reminder on your Fitbit 2 days before your period is scheduled to start.

This is super helpful if you are someone that doesn’t pay attention or always forgets when it is going to start.

As you ladies know, you period changes with age, stress, lifestyle, and medications, as well as some medical conditions. So keeping an eye on it is always a good idea.

Improve Your Fitness

If you are into fitness, it is going to be easy to sell you on why you need a Fitbit. If you are bit on fitness, but want to make some positive changes, even small changes, then you are going to want a Fitbit at the end of this as well.

1. Tracks Your Steps

Fitbit Step Tracker- Why You Need A Fitbit

When I first got my Fitbit this was probably the main reason why. I wanted it to track my exercise as well, but getting into that routine was difficult for me, so I wanted to ensure I was at least walking enough.

It is said that you should be getting 10,000 steps each day.

If you didn’t know this already, you can actually lose weight just by walking. It is also a great low impact exercise you can easily do by yourself or with others.

I have to say I absolutely love going for a nice long walk with my husband. It gives us time to unwind and talk without other distractions.

I also love being able to keep tabs on my steps because it helps keep me motivated to walk more.

If you feel like you don’t get much walking in, or you have a job where you sit most of the day, then you need a Fitbit. It is really going to help up your stepping game.

2. Tracks Physical Activities

Fitbit Exercise Tracker- Why You Need a Fitbit

The Fitbit also tracks many different physical actives, like biking, weights, and interval workouts, just to name a few.

Physical activities is vital for your health and fitness.

Research has shown that exercising just 3 times a week for 30 minutes can greatly reduce or eliminate symptoms of depression.

Exercise also strengthens your muscles and improves your endurance.

By tracking your daily activities and exercise, it can become more of a habit for you.

It also helps keep you motivated because you can actually see your progress.

For example, the Fitbit app shows you how many days you worked out.

And this brings me to the next point of why you need a Fitbit and how it can help your fitness.

3. Can Set Goals

Fitbit Goal Setting- Why You Need A Fitbit

I am a huge goal setter. It sounds dorky but I love setting goals and crushing them!

There is something about the feeling of accomplishment when you reach your goals.

I know you know what I’m talking about.

With a Fitbit, you can set your own goals. How many days a week you want to work out, how many hours you want to walk 250+ steps, the amount of calories you want to burn, the number of floors you want to walk, how many miles a day you complete, and how many active minutes you have.

Setting goals gives you something to work for and the motivation to push yourself to reach them.

For the longest time I had my step goal set under 10,000 steps. I felt like it was a lot to strive for. But when I actually set it for 10k, I found myself making sure I took extra steps and got up to move around more.

Now, the average steps I take each day is 13,700.

So, if you haven’t set some fitness goals for yourself, a Fitbit may be just what you need to keep you motivated.

4. Can Add Friends Or Join Groups

Join Fitbit Groups- Why You Need A Fitbit

Everything is more fun with a friend!

The Fitbit app allows you to add other Fitbit users or join groups, so you can cheer each other on and keep each other motivated.

There is such a wide variety of groups you can join to connect with people that are interested in the same thing as you.

For example, they have a groups with all sorts of topics for eating well, family, eating health, feeling good, getting moving, health, and weight management.

Having others to share your fitness journey with can make all of the difference.

And you might be surprised what you can learn from these groups.

5. Can Join Challenges or Adventures

Fitbit Challenges and Adventures- Why You Need A Fitbit

This is a super neat offer that Fitbit has. You are able to join challenges, with friends or simply with other Fitbit users. These challenges are to see who can get the most steps.

You ca also try some adventures. This is where you can virtually race against your friends, or Fitbit users, along real life locations. The first to reach the finish line wins.

OR you can virtually explore real life locations on your own.

Any of these are going to help you stay engaged and stepping more.

It is also a nice break from your usual fitness routine.

Plus, you can learn some really cool information on different places along the way.

6. Free Workout Videos

Fitbit Free Workout Videos

If you are someone that needs a workout video to follow, then this is perfect for you.

There are a ton of different free workout videos on the Fitbit app.

Or you can play it right on screen if you have the Versa 2 or Ionic.

This can also give some variety to your routine or help you if you aren’t sure what type of workout to do.

If can show you new exercises and help get you into a fitness routine.

They have different skill levels, so you will have no problem finding something for you.

7. Can Join Premium

Fitbit Premium

This is not something you have to do, but if you enjoy the other features of Fitbit, you might consider this.

By joining Premium, you can get over 150 video workouts, programs for creating healthy habits, and a wellness report for your health trends.
