If you have read any of my other posts then you know I don’t mess around. If this is the first post you’re reading then you will learn that pretty quick.
I am not here to give you a quick fix. I know you are probably thinking “yeah I want the quick fix! NOW!”
Don’t get me wrong I will share any tricks and tips I have with you and maybe some might show you some fast results.
But what we are doing here is working on making your goals last.
There are so many people out there telling you you can “lose 10lbs in 2 weeks” or “get 6-pack abs in 12 days”. That’s all fine and dandy but we all know what happens after that.
You gain the weight back, sometimes plus some, and those abs disappear!
What they fail to do with these quick fixes is show you how maintain those goal. How to keep that weight off or stay in shape.
I’m not going to lie to you, staying fit can be a real challenge sometimes!
But each post that I do is part of an overall guide to help you reach the goals you want and learn to maintain them. That means you don’t have to look for those quick fixes anymore!
So, to get going in the right direction, you need to know about nutrition and why it is a vital part of your health & fitness goals. I am not a nutritionist, I do not claim to be one, however, I feel it is vital so I want to touch on the topic.
The definition of nutrition is “the act or process of nourishing or being nourished. Specifically : the sum of the processes by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances”.
To me that sounds a little weird so I am going to explain it this way. When you eat food, your body breaks it down and uses what it is made of. If you are having fruit, your body takes all those great vitamins to, you guessed it, nourish your body. The same is true if you eat something unhealthy.
Your body does all the work. So don’t you think you should do a little work to put the best stuff in your body?
Benefits of Nutrition
Now I know you are probably asking yourself why I am highlighting the benefits to nutrition. You aren’t dumb. You know that eating right is the healthy thing to do. And that helps you be healthy.
And you’re right!
But I added this section because I really want you to soak in the significance of eating right. You might be focused on one particular goal right now, but you shouldn’t lose sight of all the other great changes that can come with reaching that goal. It may not seem important now, but it might in the future.
Not only can it help you to lose weight and maintain it, but it can also help in many other areas of your health.
It can help to reduce your risk of some diseases, like heart disease and diabetes.
You can also better your cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
It could help you be more energized and focused.
Good nutrition can help lessen depression as well.
I could go on and on but I think you get the gist of it. Eating well can affect a lot of areas of your well-being.
What Can Help You Make Better Decisions
I say it is important to be healthy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is always easy. I still struggle sometimes. Fortunately, there are some things that can help you to make sure you are making better nutritional decisions.
A nutritionist is a person that has studied nutrition. They are different from a dietitian, who is someone that can diagnosis eating disorders and help meal plan for managing symptoms of health problems.
A nutritionist helps teach their clients about the general nutrition and health properties in food. They also offer nutritional supervision, meaning they help set up a meal plan and make sure you stick to it.
If you have the money to spend, this can be a great option. You can learn a lot from a nutritionist about what the best foods are for you. What is best to eat when. And what you should really stay away from.
Also, if you are one of those people that absolutely hates to meal plan, they can do it for you.
If you are looking to monitor your eating habits on your own, a nutrition calculator, or food calculator can be a great asset to you. This is a calculator where you can type in the food you are eating and it brings up a lot of the nutritional facts for that food.
Here is an example of what the facts look like for an Apple on WebMD’s food calculator.
This gives you a good idea of what you can track when you use one of these nutrition calculators.
Some people also find it helpful to have a book, such as the one pictured below. It is really like a hard copy of a nutrition calculator. This books has thousands of foods listed and even breaks them down my brands too. It tells you a lot of what you would find on a nutrition label.
Many fast food restaurants now have these as well. You can go on their websites and look at the facts on any of their foods. Some places like Subway even let you put in your custom order to see what the nutrition facts are for your custom sandwich.
Nutritional facts are what are going to help you make healthier choices. To do this, you always want to make sure you are paying attention to the nutrition facts on your food.
When you are shopping, it is a good idea to look at the label and compare a few different brands. This can take some time, but when you get the same items, you will know which brands are the healthiest.
If you do not normally look at these labels, you will be surprised at what you find. I know the first time I started to pay more attention, I couldn’t believe some of the facts.
Just the other day I had a Nutty Buddy. I can’t remember the last time I had one of those, but I looked at the nutrition facts and couldn’t believe how many calories, fats, and carbs it had. Don’t get me wrong, it was good. I just now know that it is one of those things to have on rare occasion.
So take a look at some of your guilty pleasures and maybe seeing the facts will help you to keep them to just an occasional treat.
Understanding the importance of nutrition and how it can impact your health and fitness goals is an important part of your progress.
You can’t expect to fix something that is broken without first knowing what is broken.
Take a long look at your eating habits. In fact, keeping a food journal for a week so can really help show you where you can improve.
If you aren’t sure what a food journal is, find out in my next post!
